Introducing Desmond

My second nephew is no longer called TBD!! He has been officially named Desmond Mathew Kegham Thomas. Here's a picture of him when he was at the hospital and using the pseudonyms "Z", "TBD Baby" and "Wiggle Worm."

Marcus and Barb couldn’t come up with a name for their first cat, either. I called her Satan (= the Unnamed One) for a while, but they were all like, we’ll name our own cat, loser. And they ended up calling her ‘Kitty’. They can pretend that it is short for ‘Katherine’, but I’m here to tell you that that is a myth.

If the same thing had happened to Desmond, Jessica and Tinu would have to pretend to be much bigger fans of ‘Dirty dancing’ than I believe them to be. And I, for one, would have put him in a corner at every opportunity, just to prove that it could be done.

Notice the Chococat bookmark?  I just started reading the book "As Always, Julia: The Letters of Julia Child and Avis DeVoto." Much to my surprise, I am loving it! Not only does it reveal Julia's cooking techniques and her road to publishing the first volume of the legendary "Mastering the Art of French Cooking"  but it also illuminates the attitudes and political climate of the 50's. In one letter Avis tells Julia that all her friends have electric dishwashers and how horrid she thinks the whole concept is. She refuses to ever get one. I still have a long way to go with the book but based on what I've already read, I just know I will continue to love it. I took a break and watched Julie and Julia , a movie which I taped a long time ago and never got around to watching. Do NOT watch this movie if you are also reading "As Always, Julia." Living in Memphis

The last few months have been a flurry of activity and travel and temporary living. Since I left California in mid-January, I have been in ten states (OH, KY, TN, FL, GA, NC, SC, AL, AR, & MS) and next week I add another one – MO. I have lived in a corporate apartment and then an extended stay hotel. I have stayed on a cruise ship and many, many hotels – mostly either Holiday Inns or Hiltons, with a few alofts thrown in too. But this week, I am moving into my home in Memphis. I don’t want to change the title of my blog because in my heart, I am still “living in Long Beach” as I really miss all my wonderful friends out there. My friend Karen is visiting to help me with the arduous task of moving and unpacking. She is here for a week and I am pretty sure it will not all be done before she is gone but she sure is helping out a LOT.
